Personality

Ever since childhood Maxime has been a very anxious and shy individual, which was not helped by him being othered and regularly bullied growing up. Because of his past, he is prone to depression and can lean towards pessimism. Maxime has a lot of trouble expressing his wants, needs, and feelings. While his face can be expressive, he often has to think about it and make a conscious effort as he’s doing it for most of his emotions, besides a worried or sad expression. Maxime struggles to articulate his feelings with words as well, often anxiously rambling and stumbling over his words when he finds the courage to try and speak up. From a young age, Maxime has always had a strong fixation on the macabre. Because of his peculiar interests and gloomy personality, he was always seen as very peculiar and didn’t fit in at all. While he has always been very introverted, he still has a strong desire to make friends.

Background

Maxime comes from an upper middle class family of funeral directors. He is an only child, and grew up very close with his parents, often coming with them to work and observing them as they did their jobs. His parents are on the eccentric side and allowed him to help with various funeral preparations when he was a bit older. Which surprisingly worked out, as he actually enjoyed playing assistant and the process of it all. Maxime quickly became adept at the job, and when he was in his early teens he began preparing bodies and directing funerals on his own for his parent’s business. This upbringing in the world of morticians paired with his dark interests made him come off as very strange to his peers, and his inability to lie or mask much combined together to make him a large target for bullying and being isolated by others. For a long time he would try very hard to fit in by being kind and gentle, but was rejected harshly time and time again. Eventually, he gave up trying and became very resigned to his fate. He threw himself into his work at his parent's business as an outlet and gained it even more notoriety. This led to him being scouted as an Ultimate by Hope’s Peak, and ultimately studying abroad for his high school career there.

Notable Relationships

• Sadiq Al-Katib: Maxime was an outcast his entire life, just like Sadiq. At the start of their time at Hope's Peak, Maxime took notice of Sadiq being socially isolated as well, and sort looked up to him at first since Sadiq simply didn't care, as opposed to Maxime who was very depressed and anxious because of it. Maxime quickly developed a queerplatonic crush on Sadiq, and often stole glances at him and fantasized about interacting with him. While Sadiq was clueless about this, Ngozi took notice of Maxime silently pining, and started befriending Maxime to help the situation and get the two outcasts to at least be friends. Ngozi consulted classmate Dulce, the Ultimate Matchmaker, and she confirmed the two as very compatible in both friendship and beyond that. Maxime and Sadiq bonded surprisingly quickly considering their introverted personalities and lack of social experience. Ngozi helped Maxime build the confidence to confess to Sadiq, and the two eventually became queerplatonic partners. After graduating, Sadiq moved in with Maxime in France. This is where the two resided until the killing game.


• Ngozi Obiako: Shortly after beginning to attend Hope’s Peak, Maxime found himself being approached and befriended by Ngozi. While skeptical at first, Maxime immediately accepted the positive attention despite being surprised by it. Soon enough, the two became friends, and welcomed into the friendship with Sadiq as well. Ngozi is the one who encouraged Maxime to confess his feelings towards Sadiq, and ultimately set them up together. Ngozi and Maxime remain good friends and stay in touch after graduating as well.
